A reliable internet connection can make or break your business outcomes, but not all connections are equal. In fact, using consumer-grade solutions to support critical business operations is risky.

When downtime hits, every minute your business spends offline is lost revenue.

Here’s how business-grade internet is the better choice for reliability and security.

Understand the difference between account types

When considering business vs. home internet, there are a handful of differences. If you’re just a freelancer working from home, you’ll probably be fine with residential internet. Otherwise, business internet is most likely the better choice (even if you run your business from home).

    Business internet is more reliable

Home internet speeds and uptime can seem great, until you hit peak times and everything drops. That doesn’t happen with business internet.

    ·  Guaranteed uptime. Business internet packages come with service level agreements (SLAs) that ensure your connection stays online. If the provider fails to keep you online, they’ll give you service credits or the option to cancel before your contract is up.

    ·  Rapid repair times. Business-class internet service promises fast troubleshooting and repair, typically within hours instead of days.

    ·  Bandwidth assurance. Home internet speeds can vary wildly because the bandwidth is shared. Sometimes people only get between 10-40% of advertised speeds despite doing everything right. Business internet is a dedicated connection that guarantees your speed, which provides you with consistent performance, even during peak usage times.

    ·  Symmetrical speeds. With home internet, download speeds are typically much faster than download speeds. With business internet, your upload speed is just as fast as your download speed.

These are just some of the main differences between home and business internet accounts to consider when making your choice.

The benefits of having a static IP

Residential internet uses dynamic IPs that change frequently. Business plans typically offer static IPs, which supports stable remote access, better security, and supports client trust.

    ·  Stable remote access. This is critical for VPNs, remote servers, secure cameras, and VoIP systems.

    ·  Better branding and security. A static IP makes email filtering, DNS configurations, and geo filters easier to manage.

    ·  More trust. Some services require whitelisted IPs. Unfortunately, dynamic IPs can disrupt essential operations if they’ve been previously blacklisted when used by other people.

Having a static IP address is essential for most businesses because the risk of being assigned a blacklisted IP is too great.

Business accounts come with dedicated customer support

When something goes wrong with your internet connection, every minute matters. Having a business-grade connection will come with access to dedicated support with priority access. Most companies offer support 24/7 and are able to resolve issues fast. If you need a tech, they’ll dispatch someone right away, usually the same day.

With home internet, you might be waiting days or weeks for a tech to come out. Many home internet users report that their techs don’t even show up for their scheduled appointments.

Proactive security is a huge benefit

Unlike residential accounts, business internet accounts are monitored continuously to identify potential threats and downtime before it hits. Business plans also tend to include additional security, like firewalls, DDoS mitigation, and VPN support. You won’t get these extras with a home internet connection.

    Regulatory compliance

If your company is regulated by industry-specific laws, like HIPAA, FERPA, or CCPA, your network connection needs to be compliant. This typically applies to industries like education, healthcare, and finance. Some industries have legal mandates for uptime as well as encryption and support. Residential plans don’t meet these strict requirements.

With a business internet plan, you’ll have infrastructure that can be documented, tested, and defended during compliance reviews. And since the connection is secure and monitored, client and customer data will be protected.

    Price – the final factor

Now let’s talk about price. Business internet can get a little pricey compared to residential plans, but you get what you pay for. If you need a secure, reliable internet connection, it’s worth the higher cost. Home internet might be fast enough, but it will never be as secure or reliable as business internet.

If price is a serious concern, start getting some quotes from providers in your area. You might be surprised to see that business internet plans are affordable, and many companies offer plans that are cheaper than satellite.

Invest in business internet for a better experience

Home internet is usually cheaper, but it’s also a gamble. Downtime, slow uploads, and weak security can cost you far more than the monthly premium for business-grade internet.

With guaranteed performance, dedicated support, and built-in security, business internet is a wise investment for maintaining a profitable and trustworthy business.
