Car insurance rate depends on multiple factors. Whether you are applying for insurance for a new car or want to renew the existing one, car insurance companies review various factors to determine the quote. Companies can use this information about your specific circumstances to determine how much to charge you for your car insurance.

In this blog, we are going to discuss the different aspects that will affect the car insurance rate.

    • Usage of the Car

    Car Model

When you apply for insurance, insurers ask for the car’s make, model, age, and value to determine your risk level. They also analyze the potential cost of repairing or replacing it.

For example, certain cars are more prone to being targeted by thieves, such as the Ford Fiesta, Range Rover, and Volkswagen Golf. These are more likely to come with higher insurance premiums attached.

    Engine Size

Engine size also affects the car insurance quote. The larger the engine size, the faster your car will go.  As long as you can drive faster, the more expensive your car insurance will be.

So, if you’re looking for a cheaper rate with better fuel economy, a one-litre hatchback is likely to outperform a V8 muscle car.

    Usage of the Car

When you receive a quote, your insurer will ask about the purpose for which you use your vehicle. Regularly using a car for business purposes,  the rate will probably be higher. And if you use it for social driving, its rate is likely low.

    Claims History

If you have not made a claim against your car insurance in a period of 3 to 5 years, you may be eligible for a quoted discount. At the same time, if you have filed multiple claims in recent years, it can make it more challenging to get a discount or affordable car insurance.

    Driving Record

Accidents and traffic violations may make you appear riskier to carriers, leading to increased rates. On the other hand, having a clean record can help you gain a discount.

    Location

Location also matters in the insurance rate. If you live in an urban area, the rates will be higher due to a higher risk of accidents. And if you live in an area where you’re facing issues like severe weather or high rates of theft, you tend to pay more for car insurance. Additionally, if you’re moving from one state to another, the cost will be higher.

    Gender

Male drivers pay more than female drivers. Because car insurance companies think that men do rough driving, especially teen male drivers, which leads to accidents. According to data from the IIHS, two out of every three teen drivers killed in car crashes are males.

In some regions and states, ban insurers from using gender in car insurance rate calculations. These regions include:

    • California
    • Hawaii
    • Michigan
    • Montana
    • Massachusetts
    • North Carolina
    • Pennsylvania

Therefore, in every other state,  men pay more for car insurance than women because of their higher traffic fatality rates and higher DUI rates.
